So one of the things that memory scientists have discovered about memory distortion is that we humans frequently remember ourselves in a better light than perhaps is accurate. So there are studies showing that people remember their grades were better than they really were, that they voted in elections they didn't vote in, that they gave more to cater than they really did, that their kids walked and talked at an earlier age than they really did. These are prestige enhancing memory distortions that people routinely make when they're not deliberately lying, but maybe it makes them feel a little better about themselves.
